On Thursday, March 18, the USC Lancaster faculty and staff hosted an Athletics Celebration. This event was held to show appreciation and support to the Lancaster athletes that put their time and effort into not only schoolwork, but their athletics as well.Nick Lawrence, Chair of Athletic Advisory Committee, Chair of the Humanities Division, and English Professor says that they want to hold events like this because the athletes deserve it. "They're a huge part of the vibrancy of our actual foot traffic on this campus. They help make this place feel like a campus. They do a lot of work in that way, build community. They're good kids. They're young men and women," says Lawrence. Not only do student athletes have to preform on the field, but they are held to the same standard in the classroom. "My experience in the classroom with them is that they're conscientious, and they do good work," says Lawrence, "and I think the campus just feels like they deserve to be recognized and celebrated for all that they do."As a junior college, student athletes make up a substantial part of the student body. Because of this, faculty and staff want the athletes to know they are appreciated."It seems to me that they it's just human to know when you're appreciated," says Lawrence.
